Earthquake Strikes Off Kyushu Island, Triggering Tsunami Advisory

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a tsunami warning for the southern coast of Japan following a magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck off the coast of Kyushu Island. The earthquake occurred at 22:26 JST (13:26 UTC) on Thursday, March 8, 2023.

Tsunami Advisories Downgraded

Initially, a tsunami warning was issued for the entire Pacific coast of Japan, but JMA has since downgraded the warning to an advisory for the southern part of the coast, including the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku. The advisory means that there is a risk of a tsunami developing, but it is not as severe as a warning.

Earthquake Causes Minor Damage, No Injuries Reported

The earthquake has caused minor damage to buildings in the affected areas, but no injuries have been reported at this time. The epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) southwest of Miyazaki City, at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
