Georgia stun Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal to make history
Underdogs Georgia shocked Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal 2-0 on Tuesday to claim their first-ever major tournament victory.
The win was Georgia's first in a major tournament, having lost their opening match to Denmark. It also marked the first time that Portugal had been defeated by a team ranked outside the top 50 in the FIFA World Rankings.
Georgia's victory was a stunning upset, with the team having been given little chance of success against a Portugal side that boasted several world-class players, including Ronaldo.
However, Georgia were well-organized and determined from the start, and they took the lead in the 20th minute through a fine strike from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
Portugal pushed for an equalizer but were unable to break down Georgia's resolute defence. The home side doubled their lead in the 60th minute through Giorgi Chakvetadze, and they held on for a famous victory.
The result was a major boost for Georgia, who are now in contention to qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament. It was also a setback for Portugal, who will need to beat Denmark in their final group game to progress.
